This can be as easy, as putting everything into a folder or you could have 2-3 folders and name them (example: Favourite Shortcuts, Games etc.). Another way if your desktop is shared by other users, everyone could have their own folders.

Why have a clean desktop?

First off it's going to be easier for you find what you want. Second and more importantly, all those icons and like the saying goes, if a cluttered desk is a sign of a busy worker, a cluttered desktop is a sign of a busy computer.

You could look at your shortcuts / icons and ask do I really need them? In most cases you will find these programs in Start > All Programs (check first) otherwise they are safe to delete. Perhaps you do not have that many shortcuts on your desktop but they are, scatted all over the place. Easy fix, right click on the desktop and then click arrange icons by > name, size, type or modified and now your shortcuts are aligned neatly. On the same menu arrange icons by > tick, auto arrange and align to grid, by doing this the next time you add a shortcut or icon to your desktop it will automatically fall into line.

A great tool that comes with most MS Office programs is called Office Shortcut Bar (see your ms office disk for installing instructions), you can place it to the right of your desktop or how I prefer it, it sits at the top. Then all you need to do is drag your icons into it, from there you can right click on the bar > Customize and organize where on the bar you want your icons to sit etc. What I like most about it, is all my shortcuts / icons then become buttons and it just requires a single click with the curser and up comes my favour programs.

Although I prefer cleaning my desktop manually and using the shortcut bar, MS Windows also have tools available to help with your desktop cleanup, with XP, Start > Control Panel > Display Properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop from here you can not only customize your desktop but also run the Desktop Cleaner Wizard.
